A rolled-back odometer can look flawless on the dashboard yet leave a clear fingerprint in the data. The digits on the cluster are the one number a seller controls; everything around them is harder to bend. Mileage fraud is fundamentally a statistics problem, and the patterns it creates are exactly what our models are built to catch.

The most reliable signal: non-monotonic mileage

Mileage should only ever increase. When successive records show a figure that falls and then rises again, something has been altered. This is the single strongest signal in our dataset and the hardest for a tamperer to erase across independent sources, because rewriting one record does nothing to the others that already captured the true reading.

It is also blunt and unambiguous. A non-monotonic sequence is not a matter of interpretation; the laws of odometers do not allow a car to un-drive kilometres, so the contradiction is as close to proof as this kind of data offers.

The secondary signals

On its own, a clean monotonic record is not proof of honesty; a careful fraudster keeps the digits consistent. So we layer in signals that are harder to fake because they live in records the seller never touched, in workshops and inspection bays rather than on the dashboard.

  • Service intervals implying more distance than the odometer shows.
  • Wear indicators inconsistent with the displayed mileage.
  • Tyre and brake replacement timing that contradicts low readings.
  • Mileage growth that stalls suspiciously right before a sale.

Any one of these can have an innocent explanation, but in combination they build a case. A car with worn pedals, fresh tyres at low stated mileage, and service intervals implying double its displayed distance is telling a story its odometer is trying to deny.

Why a single year matters

Fraud often hides in a single suspicious interval rather than the whole history. A car that averages a believable annual figure can still conceal one year where the mileage barely moved before a resale. We model each interval, not just the lifetime average, so a localised anomaly cannot hide inside a plausible mean.

A lifetime average is the easiest number to fake and the easiest to be fooled by. The truth usually hides in a single inconvenient year.

Probability, not accusation

We never label a car fraudulent. We assign a probability that its mileage history is inconsistent and show the evidence behind it. A high score is a reason to inspect and ask, not a court verdict, and we are careful to keep that distinction so an honest seller with a quirky record is not branded a cheat.

What rollback costs the buyer

The stakes are not abstract. A car showing 70,000 kilometres that has really covered 130,000 is priced for wear it has not yet shown and carries maintenance bills the buyer has not budgeted for. The premium paid for a falsely low reading is real money, and the timing belt or clutch that fails years early is the bill that follows it. Detecting a rollback is not pedantry; it is the difference between the car you paid for and the car you actually own.

What to do with a flag

A mileage flag is one of the most actionable signals a report can carry. Cross-check the physical wear against the displayed figure, ask for service records that cover the suspect interval, and treat any reluctance as information in its own right.

Detection improves as the data deepens. Every additional independent record makes a rollback harder to hide, which is exactly why corroboration sits at the centre of how we score mileage integrity, and why a thin-history car deserves more of your scrutiny, not less.
